Usage
The Item must be contained within a steel box lined with special soundproofing material within a soundproof chamber with walls ten (10) centimeters thick. Entry is only permitted with Gamma Level clearance or by special request of the Cell Director. Guard personnel must wear earplugs and/or noise-cancelling headphones during their entire shift. The Item will be placed on Dial 1 only upon order of Central Intelligence. Dial 2 and Dial 3 will only be activated by research personnel during experimentation.
Personnel must take care with the Item to avoid activating Dial 4. Any activation of Dial 5 by the Item must be reported immediately.
Activation of Dial 6 and 7 is strictly prohibited under degradation and imprisonment. Activation of Dial 8, whether incidental or done on purpose, will lead to immediate termination.
Report
It is a 1967 Russian Astrad model F8-TR17-B202 radio with 8 broadband ranges. In addition to being composed internally of transistors and diodes like all normal models, it also has several strange bulb-shaped mechanisms, small tesla coils and clockwork mechanisms with unknown glyphs engraved on them. The seal of the GdI-010: The Factory is marked on one side of its back.
When the dial of the item is manipulated, it will manifest various anomalies that will depend on the chosen transmission channel. The anomalies, although diverse in nature, share the same conditions for them to be activated:
- They must be heard by a conscious and sapient being.
- The subjects must be able to hear.
- The subjects must be within a range of eight (8) meters from the item.
- Subjects must be able to understand the meaning of what they hear
- Subjects must be the ones manipulating the dial.
Below is a sample of the effects of each receiving station as well as the most relevant experiments.
When the dial is set to this signal the Item is able to disrupt radio transmissions, phone calls, satellite calls, etc. The signal always appears to be random, but is always related to some transmission from some government organization, whether mundane or anomalous. So far there seems to be no way to trace such transmissions back to their source without compromising the integrity of the Item. All transmissions always seem to involve sensitive and classified information.
| Broadcast |
Duration |
Relevant Information |
| Local police radio signal |
2:35 minutes |
Information about a robbery that occurred in the city of ██████, Oaxaca. The police appear to be using a rigged radio, while both appear to discuss their involvement as accomplices in the robbery. Details are given of the amount stolen and locations of meeting points with the robbers, which include the local governor and the city's police chief. |
| Coast Guard Emergency Channel |
3:06 minutes |
The broadcast appears to be taking place on a private channel. The conversation, from what little is known, is between a coast guard on some beach in Cancun and a captain of a ship that appears to have avoided nearby ports. The captain talks about the location and unloading of a drug shipment worth over $1,000,000 US dollars. |
| Cell Phone Call |
12:01 minutes |
The conversation appears to be between an unknown man and a prostitute from some unidentified district of Tijuana. For the next few minutes the prostitute details a crime she committed involving the murder of a wealthy lawyer while they were having sex. The unknown man gives the woman instructions on who to call to make the body disappear and clear the place of evidence. He then talks about taking over the lawyer's property which includes a well-known chain of hotels. |
| Military Transceiver Transmission |
7:50 minutes |
An unknown corporal calls his general on duty about an incident carried out by members of his platoon during his relief. The information is unclear and there is no way to confirm it, but the soldiers appear to have killed at least four DEA members and two other American federal agents in a shootout. Efforts to hide the signal are minimal because most of the military garrison is helping cover up what happened. |
| Encrypted Foundation Channel |
20:00 minutes |
A transmission from a Mobile Task Force to Site-██ based in █████, Venezuela. It describes the existence of an extremely aggressive Vertigo-class anomaly that has been encountered by local authorities. The transmission describes security protocols, cover-up history, and use of standard containment procedures for the capture of hostile Keter-class humanoid entities. |
When the dial is set to this cue the Item begins to play music for a random amount of time. Some subjects who hear this music describe it as "the best song they have ever heard." Subjects describe a strong urge to listen to the music again even though none of them can remember or reproduce any of the tunes after hearing them. The effects of listening to the tunes are varied and have never been repeated.
| Piece |
Duration |
Effect |
| Ambient Music |
4:30 minutes |
Music described by the test subjects only as "relaxing." The music appears to be an instrumental piece using an unknown number of instruments, some of them unrecognizable. The test subjects remain pacified for the entire duration of the piece, even if attempts are made to provoke or attempt is made on their life. |
| Indie Punk-Rock |
3:45 minutes |
The piece causes an almost immediate effect of chronic depression. The instruments in the piece are able to recreate sounds of human moans and cries that were originally believed to be real people. The subjects enter a state of severe drowsiness and insensitivity that makes them vulnerable to manipulation. |
| Dark Cabaret |
3:36 minutes |
The music seems to somehow affect the surroundings of the item and the test subject who is the only one who can perceive it. It is described as a "gloomy and uncomfortable" environment being unable to give more details. The music does not seem to be different from any other commercial type, but the violin solos tremble to the point of making everything around the item vibrate. The exposed subjects develop a paranoia that can lead to schizophrenia if not treated in time. |
| Symphonic Metal |
N/A |
[DATA EXPUNGED] decibels beyond known range. It is theorized that these could have increased had the device not been turned off. Testing stopped due to risk of breach and destruction of the building and possibly the base in general. |
| Classical Music |
11:09 minutes |
The music begins with a narrator saying the name of the piece and the symphonic band that plays it. Both the piece called "Sonate zur Leere der Existenz" as the symphonic band █████████ ██ do not exist in any kind of historical archive. Test subjects are affected by an infohazard that causes them to stand in the middle of the room and wave their arms like a conductor using a baton until the music ends. Upon completion of the piece the subject will then begin humming the same song. When this is heard by any individual they will suffer from Musical Ear Syndrome. or Musical Tinnitus for life, with the piece being the music being heard. |
When the dial is set to this signal the Item begins to transmit from an unknown radio signal that appears to pick up the voices of deceased subjects. These subjects are usually related in some way to the person listening at the time, making this the only anomaly that seems to depend on who is listening at the time. All of the voices picked up by the radio display an antagonistic attitude toward the test subjects. The subjects behind the broadcast either do not seem to pick up the subjects' responses over the radio or seem to purposely ignore them.
| Subject |
Duration |
Notes |
| Prisoner, formerly member of the Scarlet Hammer |
13:00 minutes |
The voice speaks a Slavic dialect. The subject immediately recognizes the voice as that of his father, who was a member of the Soviet Army. The father spends the next few minutes berating his son for running away from home and for abandoning his duties to his family and country. The subject attempts to dissuade the father but the father continues uninterrupted. |
| ███ █████, Insurgent Soldier |
11:24 minutes |
The voice is recognized by the subject as that of his brother, who was a lieutenant in the army and helped him enter the Mexican army. The brother yells at him for several minutes about his betrayal for having betrayed him in order to stay with ██████, the soldier's former fiancée before joining the Insurgency. |
| Prisoner, formerly a member of the ███████ cartel |
12:14 minutes |
Curiously the transmission consists solely of screams from a young woman who is identified as the test subject's wife. The screams stop seconds before ending and finally end with the woman's voice whispering "I'll be waiting." |
| Prisoner, humanoid with psychic abilities |
4:02 minutes |
[DATA EXPUNGED] so it is believed that the transmission occurred the entire time inside his head. The subject has stopped manifesting psychic abilities of any kind and just sits in his cell repeating "I'm sorry" over and over. |
This transmission is only activated when any subject has the intention of damaging the Item in any way. When the subject is within a meter with the intention of destroying the Item, it will begin to play a tune similar to that of a music box. Upon hearing this music, any subject within the radius of effect who can hear the music will proceed to attempt suicide by any means available to them. So far there is no other means of activating this state even if the dial is turned to this signal. The tune has also not been able to be recorded or recognized. The tune does not seem to have the same effects if heard through a recording even if it occurs in real time.
This signal is the only one that is activated randomly and is practically impossible to activate as the dial gets stuck when trying to manually turn it in this position. When activated a radio host's voice will begin to be transmitted, similar to radio shows from the 1920s. Usually the broadcast consists of the host speaking in what seems to be a mix of podcast and newscast talking about recent world events, which are always related to catastrophic events such as natural disasters, shootings, terrorist attacks and the like. The commentator usually speaks about these events in a scathing and ironic manner, although he never uses insults or obscene language.
After a two hour broadcast the host will then ask listeners to call the station by dialing ██-███-███-███ (███). If no one dials the number two minutes after the announcement the show will end.
If the number is dialed the host will answer the phone and ask the caller live, asking if they want to know a secret. If the caller answers "no" the host will say that it is a pity and hang up ending the radio transmission as well. If the caller answers "yes" the host will recite a series of numbers and then hang up and end the radio transmission.
These numbers are usually coordinates that when followed on a map lead to a nearby and usually deserted location. In these places, objects and artifacts of anomalous nature of Low and Medium Interest are usually discovered after a thorough inspection.
To date and after █ years of having the Item, the transmission has only been activated ██ times with only █ of these giving locations of Anomalies of Interest.
When the Article is activated on this signal a distorted voice that identifies itself as the "radio consciousness" will begin to speak and will begin a non-stop speech that seems to have no end with the longest active time being two (2) days. Those who use Anti-Memetic Sound Filters say that the speech is meaningless and consists mostly of delusional sentences. Those who listen to this voice without any protection will be able to understand the voice in its original language. Anyone who listens to the broadcast for more than ten (10) seconds will suffer severe hallucinations that can lead to panic, paranoia and psychosis if not treated immediately.
Note: Plans to militarize this anomaly are underway.
When this signal is selected only white noise will be heard. Occasionally, at random times, a barely audible whisper can be heard that seems to be recognized by personnel as the voice of a young woman. Research and experimentation must be conducted in order to obtain a clean version of the message transmission and decipher its contents All research has been cancelled until further notice.
[FILE CLOSED BY ORDER OF THE DELTA COMMAND]
Appendix: Discovery
The item was initially discovered by the Foundation in an unknown area in Russia in 19██ under unclear circumstances, classified as SCP-███ and contained within Site-██ located in Trinidad, Cuba. On ██/██/1959 the site was attacked by paramilitary forces of Fidel Castro's Rebel Army as part of his takeover. This attack is believed to have been accomplished through information provided by a member of GoI-132: Marshall, Carter, & Dark Ltd. who obtained several anomalous objects contained within the site in exchange.
In 2017, during the dissolution of GoI-1221: Cuba's Ministry of Anomalies and the assimilation of all of its resources by the Foundation, a group of Insurgency double agents managed to gain access to the main database used by the Ministry and passed this information on to Central Command, where a list of anomalies that were in the custody of Site-██ at the time was discovered. When the Item's whereabouts were discovered, Delta Command contacted MC&D to purchase the radio for the sum of █,███,███$ US dollars.
Date: ██/██/20██
[Start Transmission]
The surveillance camera is pointed at Item #32 on its pedestal inside his containment room. Commander ██ enters the room and sits down in the chair next to it. He then activates Item on Dial 8. The radio begins to emit a static noise and then goes silent.
Commander ██: Can you hear me?
Item #32: [Silence]
Commander ██: Can you hear me yes or no?
Item #32: …Yes…
Commander ██: Do you know who I am?
Item #32: …Yes…
Commander ██: Then you know what I'm capable of. Tell me what I want to know and I'll leave you alone.
Item #32: [Silence]
Commander ██: The Engine told us about you. Through the new Engineer, it told us of your existence and sent us to find this device to communicate with you. What does the Engine want with you?
Item #32: …Do you… know who I am?
Commander ██: …No.
Item #32: …I am what was left after the universe before this one died. I am its carcass, the shell it left behind when it came into current existence. I am the one who emerged from the rust that was born from the remains of the Machine God. When the cage it made from its own body was breached by the Flesh, I emerged from the pieces that were never found. I became your broken heart in your moment of greatest despair, when the skies turned black and the earth itself was engulfed in flames"…
Commander ██: …What do you desire?
Item #32: …The Flesh has grown stronger than ever. It looms before you like the shadow of the black nebulas where those who have been forgotten shelter. They come for you, for your power, for your possessions, for your men, for your lives… for the ancient heart of the god…
Commander ██: …For the Engine?
Item #32: …This will be the first touch, the first passionate kiss in the endless dance you and the Flesh will have. But eventually it will turn obscene, eventually the violence will give way to pain and then delight and then… pleasure… and you will become what you swore to fight…
Commander ██: …That will not happen…I swear by the Engine.
Item #32: …Triumph and there will be more than one throne to reign on…lose and there will be nothing left but oceans of blood and mountains of ash when she comes…
Commander ██: She?
At this point Article #32 shuts itself off. Commander ██ stares at the radio for a moment and then rises from his chair and leaves the chamber.
